Software Engineering Manager, Audience Experience

About this Role:

As our Software Engineering Manager, Audience Experience, you’ll bring a strong background in software engineering management supporting production code with an active user base, and either frontend web technologies or React Native (preferably both). Ideally, you will have a work history of operating in a hybrid content/media and technology footprint and strategy (ex. Netflix, Hulu, Disney, Khan Academy, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning, etc.).

You will need a trust-generating communication style with engineers and stakeholders, a commitment to our cross-disciplinary model of planning and execution, and the ability to lead people in a hybrid remote environment. You can judge both code performance and user experience and an openness to understanding BibleProject’s content and paradigm for approaching the Bible so that you can help us achieve our mission.

Most importantly, you’ll be an integral part of maturing the product engineering culture of BibleProject, setting and maintaining a high bar with regards to our standards and people and working to create an environment where great technical professionals like yourself can ship work worthy of our mission at a sustainable pace that reflects the BibleProject values: creative, humble, thoughtful, unifying, generous, and unhurried.

Core Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Lead the Native Mobile App and Website squads to deliver high-impact projects that align with business and audience goals.
  • Encourage innovative approaches by championing creative solutions and calculated risk-taking.
  • Champion engineering best practices, including testing, observability, code quality, and continuous delivery.
Responsibility
  • Ensure timely, high-quality delivery through effective planning, estimation, and coordination with product and project partners.
  • Partner with tech leads to guide system design and architectural decisions that balance short-term needs with long-term scalability and maintainability.
  • Support operational excellence by ensuring team readiness for on-call responsibilities, incident response, and postmortems.
  • Tackle open-ended challenges by defining clear strategies for ambiguous, complex problems.
  • Foster a team culture of psychological safety, inclusion, and shared ownership.
  • Help identify, evaluate, and manage contractors to augment our squads

Expertise

  • Hire, retain, and manage software engineers.
  • Conduct regular performance check-ins, support career growth through clear leveling and feedback, and partner with HR on performance management.
  • Grow in technical command of our mobile (React Native + GraphQL) and web architectures (a combination of web components, React/Remix, GraphQL).
  • Continuously improve developer workflows, tooling, and internal processes to support team efficiency and satisfaction.

What we are looking for

  • 6+ years of experience as a part of a cross-functional team delivering production code at scale, demonstrating increasing levels of leadership
  • 3+ years of experience working on a mobile and/or web product that served at least tens of thousands of weekly active users (Note: BibleProject’s existing App and Web audience is several orders of magnitude larger)
  • 2+ years of professional background as either a technical project lead or software engineering manager, working on a multi-layered architecture
  • A background as a software engineer that worked in a product organization (as opposed to a consultancy)
  • High EQ and empathy, demonstrated in a referenceable history of former colleagues
  • A commitment to performance, security, and reliability as critical components in delivering outstanding user experience
  • An understanding of BibleProject’s content, paradigm, and educational goals
  • A desire to shape and belong to a team with a noble mission and culture
